Cover Redesigns – The Cruel Prince

Cover redesign, or fan covers, has been something I’ve been doing for a short while now, and I’ve been having a lot of fun with it! I’ve done some of my favourite books, and some not so favourites. I tend to pick them by asking for suggestions from my Instagram followers.

Sometimes that bites me in the ass, like this time. Because a good friend of mine suggested The Cruel Prince – bear in mind this is the same friend who suggested Twilight to me. But I’m not one to back away from a challenge, so I redesigned The Cruel Prince.

Now, those of you who have been with me for a while know that I don’t exactly have the best thoughts about The Cruel Prince – or the entire series so far. I think it’s dangerous and an abuse fantasy disguised as romance and sold to young teenagers. But hey, it’s ok because sexy faeries, right?! *eyeroll*.

Anyway we’re not here for a review, we’re here for a cover redesign.

This was quite hard to redesign if I’m honest. I don’t think much of the series and nothing I could think of was really striking any inspiration with me. I didn’t want to do some faerie party on the cover, and the whole ‘foresty’ thing with twigs and a crown had already been done on the original cover.

But I did finally have one idea, and when inspiration struck, it struck hard and I knew exactly what I wanted to do!

Why did I choose this cover?: Because I ain’t no wimp backing down from a challenge from a friend.
Did I have an idea going in to it?: Not initially, but then I got an awesome (in my opinion) idea!
Did I like the book?: No. Absolutely not.
Are you happy with it?: Yeah actually. As much as I hate the book, this is probably one of my favourite covers to date.

So, here’s the original cover:

The Cruel Prince (The Folk of the Air): Amazon.co.uk: Black, Holly ...

And here’s my design:

When I had the idea for this, I ran with it. And I’m really happy with how this turned out. This is inspired by a very specific scene in The Cruel Prince that I hope is recognisable if you’ve read the book, and intriguing if you haven’t. I’ve seen a fair bit of fanart on Instagram about this particular scene, so I hope it’s recognisable!

These are Cardan’s hands (actually, they are a woman’s – but Cardan is a faerie, so I’d imagine he’d have long, slender feminine hands and long nails). Let me tell you, photoshopping nail polish on it much harder than it seems!

My concept for this cover, if it were to ever be made, was to have the gold smear at the top in foil, and for the gold on the hands to have a subtle shimmer to them.

Anyway, what did my followers think of my cover when put up against the original?

At this point I would like to remind people that I don’t do these cover redesigns because I think the original design was bad or anything like that. I’m not here to shit on any designers. But I have to say that this felt DAMN good!

YASS! I win! I know it’s not by much and I’m being super petty, but HA! I still won! Woohoo!

I got to admit it feels amazing to overcome both not wanting to do this cover in the first place, it’s only because my friend is an asshole, and then overcoming a creative block and then winning! Woohoo!

I’m on a total high and I hope it continues for whatever cover I decide on next!

(By the way – I did an interview with Micaela Alcaino – a real book designer! So go check that out too!)
