Ok, it’s Bitesize time yet again! Here are four books that I’ve recently read that probably won’t get much more attention on here other than a quick review. But hey, that doesn’t mean that I didn’t like them! (One was even a 4.9/5) but I’m managing to practically devour books at the moment! Enjoy!
Girls With Razor Hearts by Suzanne Young 0.5/5 stars
What garbage. What an absolute waste of my time.
I didn’t like the first one, but considering the first one did not have an orignal premise, I wanted to at least give the sequel a chance to make-up for things. I’m an idiot for hoping.
This is more of the same mindless ‘men are bad because they are men’ crap that the first book had, and the plot went absolutley no where. The characters are flat, boring and repetative and – at times – hypocritical in places.
It would be hilarious if it wasn’t so pathetic.
I’m not even going to give the 3rd book in this hateful, spiteful series a chance. I’ve had enough hatred.
Music From Another World by Robin Talley 3.75/5 stars
This was a cute, quick read about LGBT rights and struggles, set in the 1970’s.
I don’t really like historical fiction (I know the 70’s wasn’t THAT far away, but it was technically last century AND last millennium…sooo….) but this was really good, and also a time in history that was incredibly important and liberating for the LGBT community, especially in America.
The characters were likable, and I was with them all the way. The writing was emotional where it needed to be and it had a solid flow all the way through.
I took some stars off because it got a *touch* too repetitive at times and it was a bit predictable in the way that makes you wanna shout “we know, just get on with it!” at the characters.
But all in all, a really cute, sweet read.
Sunstone by Stjepan Šejić 4.9/5 stars
I am still smiling to myself DAYS after reading this. I absolutely loved this graphic novel and I’ve instantly bought the other volumes in the series.
Before we get started – Sunstone is a F/F romance that features a light BDSM (but a lot of it) and nudity. So if you can’t appreciate naked humans, women’s bodies in this case, BDSM, or sexual exploration, maybe give this a miss. But if your open minded or curious, this could be the graphic novel for you!
Sunstone has BEAUTIFUL art, I really have to emphasise that, OMG. It’s a beautiful graphic novel to look at. Top that off with some amazing characters who are handled as real humans, with realistic emotions and behaviours and you’ve got the ingredients for a funny and heart-warming romance that explores sexual desire,
I found Sunstone to be a perfect example of sex, sexuality and kinks being explored with grace and maturity. The sex serves a purpose, it’s not just there for cheap thrills, it’s the same situation for the nudity. Nothing is ‘for the sake of it’.
I love how this helps normalise sexual exploration. I’m a really sex-positive person and wish more people would discuss or explore this sort of thing. Sex is a normal part of life and shouldn’t be as taboo as it is.
Sunstone is an absolute masterpiece. I can’t find a single fault in it. Beautiful artwork, beautiful characters and a beautiful message.
Our Wayward Fate by Gloria Chao 3.25/5 stars
I really enjoyed American Panda, by the same author, so I was really excited to read Our Wayward Fate. Unfortunatley Our Wayward Fate just didn’t hit the mark for me.
It just seemed to lack some of the magic and charm that American Panda had.
As much as I really enjoyed the story, and it highlights some important aspects of culture, I just don’t feel like there was any warmth to the story or plot, which is a shame because the romance felt quite genuine.
I don’t regret reading it, and it’s cute, but it’s just not as good as American Panda for me.
And that’s it for now, be sure to check out my Bitesize library for more quick reviews – if that’s your thing. But for now, that’s all from me until next time!
