Gloves Off – Louisa Reid 4/5
Wow, this was more enjoyable than I’d have initially thought. The story was all about someone becoming confident in themself and it was an incredibly empowering story.

I found that the story was very punchy and flowed really well (especially for a novel in verse, which I usually struggle with) and the characters were fleshed out brilliantly. I hated the characters I was supposed to hate, I loved the characters I was supposed to love and I felt deeply all the way throughout.

I felt like this was a book that was incredibly empowering and has a wonderful message of becoming the best version of yourself, both physically and mentally and becoming a stronger person.

I really enjoyed it and might even re-read it!

Clap When You Land– Elizabeth Acevedo 3.9/5
This is my second book from Elizabeth Acevedo and whilst I enjoyed it more than the previous, there’s still something blocking me from giving a 5 star rating.

Clap When You Land follows Camino and Yahaira, two young women who have their lives thrown together when their dad dies in a plane crash – but they didn’t know about each other.

What follows is a bit of a family drama and a coming of age story with intense imagery and power.

I have to give Acevedo credit for being able to pack as much of a punch into her novels in verse as she does. There’s no denying that her words are incredibly powerful and moving. She has her characters experience some really raw emotion.

I think what stops me from giving her books 5 stars is that I feel like the characters lack some depth. They tend to have one or two characteristics and they are hammered home completely. I like characters that are a bit more fleshed out.

The Court of Miracles (Court of Miracles, #1)

The Court of Miracles – Kester Grant 4.8/5
Oh WOW am I glad I didn’t sleep on this one!

I absolutely adored this one! It’s a loose (very loose) retelling of Les Mis but I don’t think that does its justice. Whilst I was reading I got Les Mis x Ocean’s 11 vibes all the way through and I LOVED it!

I’m honestly a little bit bummed that it’s the first in a series because I think this would have been an AMAZING standalone.

But anyway, I LOVED the characters and the world-building. Because honestly, the plot is a bit…meh. It’s a basic revenge/rescue story but the characters and the world make it feel SO unique and new and refreshing!

You don’t have to know/have read/have seen Les Mis to enjoy this at all. But if you have you’ll get a kick out of some of the character names and some of the reimaginings.

I’m not exactly being coherent here, but let me just say that I highly, highly HIGHLY recommend this book. I listened to the audiobook and it is one of the best audio experiences I’ve had!

I just loved this book!

The Upside of Falling – Alex Light 4.3/5
This was so so cute! It was short (really short actually), sweet and a perfect palate cleanser.

This is a YA contemporary romance – which is not something I’d ever usually read, but I was kinda sent this one by the universe. I won a competition on twitter for a swag bundle and a recipe for Jelly Bells (a confection in this book) was in the swag bundle. So I decided to make them, and even though I didn’t have all the ingredients they were quite delicious. So I decided to read this. And I’m so glad I did!

This is a pretty A-B plot, but it never pretends to be anything other than that. It’s one of those ‘does what it says on the tin’ books and if you want/need a soft, sweet, happy story then this is it.

I’m a bit bummed out that the characters weren’t fleshed out. Becca, one of our MCs, mentions that there’s more to her than her books at one point – but we never, ever see it. Same with Brett. He’s not really much more than football. Although he’s more of a real person than Becca is. But I would have liked the characters fleshed out a bit more -I think the page count could have accommodated it. but it’s not really the point.

This is all about 2 nice people falling in love. And I was here for it.

Also, I’m gonna remake the Jelly Bells with the real ingredients and see if they get tastier!

And we have reached the end of another batch of bitesize reviews! I hope you enjoyed them and if you’re after more mini reviews feel free to check out others I’ve done!
