Bitesize Reviews Vol. 25

It’s bitesize time again! And it’s a fair few graphic novels as I needed to hit my Goodreads goal! But hey, they count! So here are three graphic novels and a novella!

I hope you enjoy! (and also check out my past library of Bitesize Reviews!)

Fireheart Tiger

Fireheart Tiger – Aliette de Bodard 2.8/5
Oh my heart is sad on this one. I SO wanted this to be a full-length novel. There was SO much going on that I was so intrigued by and it was all just crammed into such a short story. This does work as a short story, but I don’t think having it as a short story is really reaching its full potential.

I just about got into the characters and then, boom. Over.

The world had the potential to be so rich and wonderful and we just didn’t have the page count to fully explore it and it’s gutting cos OMG does this short story have amazing fantasy standalone potential! So gutted!

I will say, that even for a short story, the romance seemed a bit rushed. I also got confused at several places simply because there wasn’t any room for exploration or clarification on the world-building and, at times, the characters, which led to a frustrating experience.

Ultimately, my frustration and disappointment led to the dropping of stars. The 2.8 are for the premise and the characters, but unfortunately, I just didn’t get enough of a good thing with this one.

Pumpkinheads – Rainbow Rowell & Faith Erin Hicks 2.1/5
Ok, let’s get the unfathomably obvious out of the way, shall we? This graphic novel was CUTE! It was cute in both the art style and all the autumnal puns.
Believe me when I say that I AM HERE FOR AUTUMNAL PUNS.
I am the unofficial queen of loving autumn, and omg was my little dark heart happy at all the puns in this graphic novel.

And all the cutesy, fun, autumnal foods and activities? Don’t even get me started! I loved the hell out of it. But they took up all the stars for this review.

The actual story here was non-existent and boring. I’m not going into spoilers, but it’s so painfully predictable from like, literally page 2, and honestly, there’s no real story anyway.

I didn’t really care for the characters, I can’t even remember their names, but I thought she was selfish and he was an idiot.

So, unfortunately, autumnal puns and foods aren’t enough to make me like a book. But I AM keeping it so that when autumn rolls around again I can revisit a pumpkin patch in my head, cos we don’t have them here, and this is the best I have right now.

But ultimately, a disappointment considering the hype.

Sunstone Vol. 4 – Stjepan Šejić 4.6/5
Omg, what can I say that hasn’t already been said by me about this series?

We continue to follow Ally, Lisa et al (hey Alan, I’m looking at you!) on their journey of sexual exploration and love – but can they admit it?

Oh boy I loved the journey, once again! These characters own my heart and I completely treasure every single pannel I share with them.

The story, once again, manages to bring such realism and relatability that it almost seems inhuman at times – like, HOW? How does the creator do this? And to top this off with just FUCKING FANTASTIC artwork that blows my mind every. single. time.

Once again, and as always, the best series I’ve ever seen in graphic novel form.

Sunstone, Vol. 5

Sunstone Vol. 5 – Stjepan Šejić 4.6/5
Once again, damn near perfection.
This one was a lot wordier than other instalments, at least that’s how it felt, but that’s not a bad thing. I am so in awe of the talent in all aspects of this creator, what a wonder.

We get to explore Ally and Lisa in a much more emotionally intimate way than we’ve ever gotten to before and this one was a much more emotionally mature story than the previous instalments.

The best thing is, it all seems so natural, it all seems so real.

I adore these characters and my heart breaks and soars along with them. This is a series I truly cherish.

Yes, it’s sexy, yes it’s adult and explicit, but it’s also raw and passionate, full of useful information and safe practice advice all rolled up with an amazing story, endearing characters and some of the most fantastic artwork I’ve ever fucking seen.

I can’t recommend enough.
