Oh I love a bit of SHADE! Obviously it’s possible to like something and be critical of it, and it’s also ok if that’s not the case because you just plane don’t like somthing. We all like different things and we’re allowed to express both positive and negative feelings!
Also, before getting started, this tag was created by Nicole & Her Books.
I did a video a while back about books I won’t read and why, but I still wanted to do this tag as some of the questions will yield different answers! Plus…tags are fun! So let’s get going!
1. A popular book EVERYONE loves that you have no interest in reading?
The Grisherverse series by Leigh Bardugo. Oh hush! Put all those gasps back in ya mouth and take your hand from atop your forehead. I’ve no doubt that this series is good – I’ve certainly heard enough about it to think that (I’ve also heard some negative reviews too!) but I just don’t really have that much of an interest in it…or her other stuff before Ninth House (which I still haven’t read yet).
I just…don’t. Like, I’m sure it is good, and I’d probably enjoy it, but I dunno…I’m just not drawn to it. 🤷♀️
2. A classic book (or author) you don’t have an interest in reading?
Dickens. Usually when you’re forced to study an author is school it makes you hate that author. I’ve never studied Dickens and I still don’t wanna read him. I’ve tried, and I just find him so dry! Even for the stuffy olden days! I’m not saying his stories aren’t good…I’m just saying I’d rather receive them in a different format….Like the Muppets Christmas Carol 😂
3. An author whose books you have no interest in reading?
Cassandra Clare. I just have no interest in an old-standing series with that many books at this point in my life. I don’t even know (nor care) if all the books from her are one or two series (or more?!). Plus I’ve heard some pretty problematic things about her and just have no interest in investing my time or money into her and her books.
3.2 A problematic author whose books you have no interest in reading? *you can combine questions 3 & 3.2 or you can answer them separately if you have an answer for both*
JKR, obvs. I don’t even need to go into that. It’s obviously her as the main one. But there’s also Mackenzie Lee, Rainbow Rowell (I know she’s not exactly actively out there hurting people, but her refusing to address her problematic shit in Eleanor & Park has full-on put me off). There’s also Maggie Stiefvater, who had a whole heap of shit going on, but the tipping point for me was the Halsey bullshit on Twitter…then I did further research and oh boy! Nope. 😂
4. An author you have read a couple of books from & have decided their books are not for you?
Suzanne Young. The ‘girls with’ series (no idea if it’s even called that but who the hell cares?) Girls With Sharp Sticks and Girls With Razor Hearts (and whatever the third one is going to be called) are genuinely some of the most hateful books I’ve ever read. Talk about tarring everyone with the same brush. Urgh. Hated them, won’t give the author any more chances/time/effort/money.
5. A genre you have no interest in OR a genre you tried to get into & couldn’t?
I know the name of this next genre is a bit of a sore point for some (others aren’t bothered by it) so please know I have no intentions of hurting or frustrating anyone, I just don’t know what else to call it. So if you know of an alternative that pinpoints this specific sub-genre of contemporary fiction please pop it in the comments below. But ‘Chick lit’ is a genre I have absolutely no interest in. Think Confessions of a Shopaholic and the like. I know they make great ‘beach reads’ (or main reads) but it’s just not a genre I’m interested in.
Also, I have no interest in books centred in/on/around either World War One or Two.
6. A book you have bought but will never read? (this can be a book you have unhauled/returned to the library unread)
Omg SO many. I just did a MASSIVE unhaul of over 200 books, and I don’t even remember half of them. Do subscription book box books count? If so then Woven In Moonlight. I got rid of that one pretty quick after getting it in Fairyloot because I just wasn’t interested in it at the time.
7. A series you have no interest in reading OR a series you started & have dnf’d?
No interest = Sarah J Maas and all her stuff. No interest, this isn’t news if you’re not new to my blog. As for a series I started and have DNF’d….Miss Peregrine’s. I read the first three and then got bored.
8. A new release you have no interest in reading?
I guess anything that either Holly Black or Victoria Aveyard come out with next. I know Aveyard’s got something new soon, but I’ve absolutely ZERO interest. Her and I do not get on when it comes to books 😂
And that’s the tag! Please remember, these are just my opinions. If you love these authors or books that’s totally fine. Not everyone will like everything/everyone else. I nominate anyone who wants to take part!
