We’ve all got that small collection of things that make us feel better – playlists for lifting us up, our favourite feel-good movies, even our most comfy PJ’s to hold us during bad days! And some of us even have stacks of books that are always a great turn-to when we need a bit of joy, or even if we’re stuck in a rut!
Here’s a short stack of those sorts of books for me!
Oh, I also did a video for this list too if you’d rather watch! Also, if you wanna subscribe to my YouTube channel that’d be awesome too! And yes, I’m in my comfy, amazing popcorn PJ’s!
Pride & Prejudice – Jane Austen
Of course, this book makes the list! Such a cliche but so true! I’ve read this so many times and I love it each time. I don’t have a fancy edition, just a floppy, thrift edition paperback but that doesn’t matter, it brings my a comfy-cosy cute lil bit of joy each time! And I’m a huge fan of the 2005 film adaptation too!
The Perks of Being a Wallflower – Stephen Chobsky
Ah, this is another beautifully comforting read for me! It’s such a quick read and it’s another one that I have a really basic, beat-up copy of and I never want to replace it. This book is so easily accessible as it’s written in letter form and is great for a quick pick-me-up. It’s a timeless classic already!
The Upside of Falling – Alex Light
This is a book that if you’d have told me a year ago that I’d not only read it, but enjoy it and enjoy it to the point where it’s a comfort read I never would have believed you. I’m not a huge YA contemporary romance reader, but there’s just something so wholesome about this fake-dating story that warms my lil heart. And i’ve made some of the baking from it too!
In Paris With You – Clémentine Beauvais
Ok, I’m almost kinda cheating with this one – my partner bought this for me, from Shakespeare & Co whilst we were in Paris, so it holds a very special place in my heart already. But I genuinely love the story too. It’s a novel in verse loosely based on Eugene Onegin by Alexander Pushkin (which I also love) and it’s so realistic and tugs on your heartstrings. It’s bittersweet and gives me feels.
Zodiac Starforce – Kevin Panetta
Well if this graphic novel can’t put a smile on someone’s face I don’t know what can! This is sassy, cute, funny and full of so much heart. It’s a bunch of diverse characters who become superheros based on the signs of the zodiac! What’s not to love?
Skin & Earth – Lights
This is another one where I’m kinda cheating with for this list. The writer and illustrator is also a (kickass) musician and I’ve been following her career and music since 2009, so I already had a strong connection to this. I’m also working on a fan project for this too, which brings me so much joy. But this graphic novel is a conceptual piece and is linked to the music album of the same name.
Voodoo – Various
This one isn’t that popular – at all. It got cancelled after the second volume, which is a shame cos i enjoyed it, but I can totally see why it might not have been that commercially successful. It’s silly, campy, cheesy and messy at times but when i want a typical ‘comic book’ read I’ll pick this sexy, violent little number up.
The Hunger Games series – Suzanne Collins
Oh this is a tried and true classic for me. I often praise it for being the series that got me back into reading as a young adult and I re-read this series at least once a year/year and a half. I still enjoy it just as much as I did on my first read and it’s great to revisit it each time I have different life experiences, I always find something new in it.
The Cursebreakers series – Brigid Kemmerer
Omg I can’t praise this series enough! I’ve only just finished this series (at time of reading) and I already know that this is such a comfort/re-readable series for me. I adore the characters, the writing, the story and I love how the first is a retelling, but the second and third books become their own story completely. Nothing but praise from me!
And those are my comfort books! What are some of your comfort reads? Let me know in the comments!
